Protecting Widows and Orphans in Uganda
In rural Uganda,
land is life.
A widow’s land represents her primary source of food, shelter, income, savings, social standing, and security.
The greatest threat to Uganda’s widows and orphans is not hunger, thirst, or disease. It is that violent men will leverage their strength, resources, and social standing to tear these women and children from the land they depend on for survival.
In Uganda, one in three widows will lose her home.
“They came with canes. They uprooted my crops and threw them in the road. They beat my cow to death. They forced me to sign an agreement to give away my property. They mocked me, saying, ‘Where will you report me? What can you do to me?’ But what hurt me the most is when the leader told me, ‘I have left a grave there for your son.’ That image has never left my mind.”
Protecting by Partnering
We deploy teams of Ugandan professionals to partner with local authorities in cases where land has been stolen from widows and orphans. Four Intervention Teams have been deployed so far, with six more planned.

The Multiplying Power of Deterrence
Redeem’s goal is not just to restore individual clients, but to create a deterrent impact that prevents future abuses and protects every widow and orphan in the community.
To amplify the deterrence of every case, we partner with local media, as well as cultural, religious, and political leaders, to broadcast the results as a warning to potential criminals.
